Dr. Keith Martin, MP introduces Poverty Reduction Bill C-414
“The Canadian Low Income Supplement will help our poorest”

OTTAWA – Today at 3 p.m. EDT Dr. Keith Martin introduced Bill C-414, which calls for the introduction of a Canadian Low Income Supplement. This legislation is the legal architecture that will give up to $2000 to those who are the poorest in Canada.

“One of the greatest responsibilities any government has is to help those who are least fortunate in our country. Yet, the great need of the poor has not been matched by any serious actions or consideration on the part of this government. The urgency is even greater during this economic downturn when the number of those in need has risen dramatically,” said Dr. Martin.

Dr. Martin’s Private Member’s Bill will put $2,000 in the hands of those Canadians who earn under $20,000 a year, declining to zero for those who earn less than $40,000. It puts real money in the hands of those who require the greatest assistance. It will help to address housing, lower education levels and poor health outcomes that restrict the ability of our poorest citizens to break out of the poverty cycle. It targets real resources to those who need them the most and ultimately will improve our nation’s economic performance by enabling a greater number of people to participate in the economy of the 21st century.

“There are too many Canadians who have to make choices between the basics: food and medication, rent and clothing. Poverty is reducing their opportunity to care for themselves and their families. The Canadian Low Income Supplement will help those most in need in our society,” concluded Dr. Martin.

- Dr. Keith Martin is the Member of Parliament for Esquimalt – Juan de Fuca.
