Proroguing Parliament costs taxpayers $130,000,000

ProroguingParliament

PM shutting down Parliament is a symptom of a much larger problem
By Dr. Keith Martin, MP

On December 30th, Prime Minister Harper prorogued Parliament without reason for the second time in just over a year. This is an affront to our democratic principles, a gross misuse of the power of his office, wastes the efforts of public servants, MPs and Senators, and is an enormous waste of the taxpayers’ money as all government legislation automatically goes into the garbage can. The total cost to the taxpayer is over $130 million. This act also neutralizes the voices of our citizens…

NOTE: Keith will be speaking at a rally on Saturday against this abuse of our democracy.
Saturday, January 23, 2010 – 1:00pm

The lethal gun battles on the streets of Vancouver, the astounding number of murders in Mexico, and the insurgency that continues to grow in Afghanistan (which results in our soldiers being killed) all have one thing in common: the trafficking of illegal drugs.

“Conservation Literacy” on the rise in Ottawa – the International Conservation Caucus

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

As some of you know, I started an All Party International Conservation Caucus two years ago to put conservation back on the agenda, protect our critical habitats and halt the unending march toward extinction that so many species are facing.  Two years on, I am now working with a great group of MPs and Senators from each party to expose Parliamentarians and civil servants to the most up to date research on habitat preservation and the protection of species, and the very best practices available to us here at home and around the world.

Last night was the first of what will be monthly conservation briefings that we invite parliamentarians, civil servants and stakeholders to attend. We hosted the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums, a leading Canadian conservation community, who shared their work and vision for future conservation activities. It was great night of sharing key issues and solutions! CAZA President Rachel Leger explained the vital role of zoos and aquariums in providing portals for the 80% of Canadians living in urban areas to the natural world. She also told us about the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup that CAZA had put on, the largest direct action conservation program on record. In 2008, over 63,000 Canadians were involved, over 1531 shoreline sites were cleaned, and over 135,467 kg of waste was removed! Incredible.  I was moved by how many people were willing to give of their time to make our country cleaner, and so many animals’ habitats more livable.

I was saddened, though, to learn that a worldwide crisis is threatening over half of our amphibian species. The crisis is linked deadly chytrid fungus, but also climate change, habitat loss, pollution and predation. We must get on these issues, and fast! For its part, CAZA has executed a national awareness program around this issue, and are working with recovery teams from across the country to try to save these frogs. CAZA has also invested over $50,000 in projects to secure the future of these frogs.

By the end of the night over 100 people had attended the briefing. The momentum to make conservation a Canadian priority is growing! I can’t tell you how proud I am of the incredible efforts of Canadian conservationists to protect habitats and secure the long term viability of our endangered species but we must do more. The caucus is committed to this. Are you? Please write me and let me know your thoughts on key conservation issues in Canada, and ways you think we should be addressing them. I will pass your thoughts and suggestions on to my colleagues and work to inform Parliament about these issues.

Thank you for reading!

World Water Day Sunday March 22, 2009

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I would like to share some staggering facts with you in light of the upcoming World Water Day 2009. The single largest cause of sickness in the world can be traced to the lack of safe drinking water and inadequate sanitation. Presently, the Millennium Development Goal of halving, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation will not succeed in Sub-Saharan African and Oceania and will fall 700 million people short of its worldwide goal.

Government gives wage cuts to RCMP for Christmas

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Our RCMP officers received quite a Christmas present from the Federal government in December.

While everyone was preoccupied with the holidays, just before Christmas, the Treasury Board suddenly decided to roll back a wage agreement that had been negotiated in good faith with the RCMP. (more…)

Thank You

Monday, October 20th, 2008

From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you so very much for enabling us to be victorious during this election. Every phone call answered, every person you spoke to, every sign put up, every burmashave attended and every letter responded to enabled us to win. As I said on election night, the successes we have in helping our constituents, our community, and our country are your successes.

I was asked who the most valuable contributor to my campaign was, and the answer is every single volunteer on our campaign. I’m very lucky to have the type of individuals such as you who are working for the public good.

Thank you again for your contributions and your sacrifice.

Best wishes,

- Keith
